Overview
Pulau Moyo is located within Indonesia’s West Nusa Tenggara province with Bali and Lombok to its West and Komodo and Flores to the East. It is situated just 2 kilometers off the north coast of Sumbawa Island.
Pulau Moyo island is mostly uninhabited and unknown to the majority of tourists. Its’ population is around 1,800 inhabitants covering 4 small villages, all of which live on fishing and farming.
In 1986, Moyo island was established as a national park in order to protect and conserve the fantastic vegetation and the many animal species (birds, bats, monkeys, wild pigs, deer). The island is surrounded by a Marine Reserve which helps preserve the unspoiled coral reefs and a huge variety of marine life.
The National Park
The National Park is home to long tail macaques, wild bovines, wild pigs, deer and 21 bat species, including flying foxes.
Bird watching enthusiasts can observe 86 species of birds, 2 of them endangered: the yellow-headed parrot and the Tanimbar Megapode bird which is endemic to Indonesia.
Inside the Park there are also a few waterfalls, the biggest one is about 2 hours from Labuan Aji village, the others are within 45-90 minutes walking distance from the resort, in the forest frequented by a multitude of colorful butterflies.
Recently, the entire coastline of Moyo Island has been declared a marine conservation area. The coral reefs and their inhabitants are now protected from fishing and pollution.
Gunung Tambora
Mount Tambora is a well-known volcano on the island of Sumbawa in Indonesia. It is famous because of its eruption in 1815, the largest volcanic eruption recorded in history, killed over 100,000 people and caused a climate cooling in 1816, which became known as the year without summer.
Being in Moyo island, you are already half-way to the majestic Tambora Volcano. We can arrange a pick-up by boat from our Resort for guests willing to reach the area and do the trek over multiple days.
Pulau Moyo – Diving Overview

The diving around Moyo island will soon become famous for its exhilarating drift dives and diversity of diving options. With a variety of sharks being seen on most dives we hope to confirm the presence of Whale sharks, Dugongs and Manta Rays at specific locations very soon.
Dive site selection is always safety conscious. We consult with our local Indonesian Captain on water movement, tides and site conditions every day and only set dive sites 1 day in advance.
We promise to vary the dive sites as much as possible and we will try to create a unique dive plan that gets you maximum exposure to the islands dive sites. We will also do our best to make sure you dive with your chosen professional throughout your stay.
For divers with a keen sense for exploration and the right level of experience, we will happily take you on virgin dive site explorations to help locate and map new dive sites for the future.
Should you have any specific dive sites requests or are interested in dive exploration, please let our team know so we can plan accordingly.

There are so many things to do in Bali, so instead of listing all of them let us know your interests. Temples, waterfalls, hiking, motorbiking, rafting, cooking, rice fields, coffee etc.
We can tailor make daytrips.
You can visit Ubud, which is a famous town in Balis inland surrounded by rice fields. Here are many many restaurants and souvenir shops and the Monkey forest where the small monkeys roam around and can get a bit nosy around tourists.
Uluwatu Temple is a Balinese Hindu sea temple built at the edge of a 70-meter-high cliff projecting into the sea. A Kecak dance performance based on the Ramayana is performed daily in Uluwatu temple at every 6pm on the cliff-side. The performance which is outdoors also shows the beautiful sunset at the background of the performance
Tanah Lot is one of Bali’s most important landmarks. Its unique offshore setting provides the perfect backdrop for sunset photos. Constructed in the 16th century to honor the Hindu sea god, Baruna, Tanah Lot is one of Bali’s most-visited landmarks.
The Mount Batur hike in Kintamani, Bali is one of the most popular and enjoyable sunrise trekking experiences you can have in Indonesia. It’s not very hard to do the Mount Batur trek from any part of the island, and the guided trek takes you up a still active volcano — Gunung Batur — with a summit elevation of more than 1,700 meters. A perfect way to catch the sunrise. You drive up to around 1200 meters and walk the last 500 meters. Total duration up and down is 2-4 hours.
Q & A
Yes beginners can dive here. There are so many dive sites and all types of topography. Many have little to no current, others can be drift dives or medium current.
The boat leaves for two dives, and the boat rides are between 5-30 minutes.
Great! Courses are available upon request.
Please contact us for further details.
Remember courses must be pre-booked.
We recommend booking the dives as a package. This will give you a better price to pre-book. However, you can dive a-la-carte if you wish but at least let the us know that you want to dive, so the resort can be prepared.
The resorts have both DIN and International (Yoke) fitting valves on the scuba tanks. See which resorts have in the “Accommodation” menu.
At the time of writing there is just one atm on the island and it is 10-20 kilometers from the resorts.
Money should be brought from Lombok or Sumbawa.
There are only a couple of small local shops at the village that sell cigarettes, mosquito repellent, chips, water and canned drinks.
NO ALCOHOL is available outside the resort.
There are some hospitals and medical clinics in Sumbawa two hours by boat from Moyo.
Moyo should still be considered a remote destination. The medical facilities are limited. Emergency evacuations may take 12 hours to the nearest major hospital in Denpasar or Jakarta.
Therefore, a full travel insurance that covers possible evacuations AND diving accidents, is required for all our guests.
Malaria is present in all the tropical regions of the world, including Indonesia. However, the area of Sumbawa/Moyo, is considered a low impact zone. See our “About” menu how to prevent malaria. When that is said, there are not many mosquitoes at the resorts, as the ocean breeze helps.
Gastrointestinal diseases: Make sure you have some rehydration salts and basic medicines on hand. (Consult your doctor regarding appropriate medicines before you go.) Anti-diarrhea medicines like Imodium are best taken only if you have to travel – they only treat symptoms, not causes. Drinking only boiled or otherwise purified water will greatly reduce your chances of stomach troubles. You can read more about drinking water here.
Skin and wound infections: You should clean and treat even small wounds immediately with an antiseptic, and then examine them regularly for signs of infection. Especially if they are coral scrapes, which are notorious for going septic. Keeping wounds dry until healed is also good practice, but it’s a big ask when you’re on a short stay in the islands. Fungal infections love a tropical environment too, so you might want to consider having some antifungal medicine in your first aid kit.
Ear infections: Spending a lot of time with water in your ears in the tropics raises the risk of ear infections, so if you’re concerned pack an appropriate medicine.
Japanese Encephalitis and Dengue Fever: These mosquito-borne diseases have been reported from Flores and are present more or less all over Indonesia and most of South East Asia. You might want to consider vaccination for Japanese Encephalitis. Avoiding mosquito bites is the only protection available against Dengue Fever.
Tropical diseases: All tropical environments harbour parasites and pathogens not found elsewhere. You’re extremely unlikely to come into contact with any of those during a short holiday in Indonesia, but if you suffer any persistent or recurrent symptoms that can’t be diagnosed or aren’t relieved by standard medical treatment – even if those symptoms appear months after your visit – you should consult a tropical diseases specialist.
See our “About” page to know more about prevention of moscuito bites.
