Wakatobi – Overview
Only 7 of the 143 total islands belonging to Wakatobi are inhabited, and most of the inhabitants live on one of the 4 major islands:
Wa-Ka-To-Bi got its name from the islands of Wangi Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia and Binongko.
The island of Tomia is located to the south of Wangi Wangi, Kaledupa. Binongko is even further south. This puts Pulau Tomia right in the heart of the Wakatobi National Marine Park. Tomia is famous for having the best diving in the Wakatobi area.
The capital of Wakatobi is situated on Wangi Wangi and is called Wanci. The harbor in Wanci make this island the doorway for all visitors to the archipelago. Wangi Wangi Island consists of numerous small villages and is the center of transportation, economics, finance, government and shopping in Wakatobi. This will also be your stop-over before moving on to Pulau Tomia.
The uniqueness of Wangi Wangi is its easy access to different activities. For visitors interested in culture, the village of Bajo Mola and heritage sites like Liya Togo offer interesting surroundings and cultural events. The island’s beaches invite you to swim and the freshest seafood awaits you in the three markets. With a motorbike or a car everything is in easy reach, and with only two major roads, getting around is simple.
Pulau Tomia
After enjoying Wangi Wangi Island you will transfer by boat to Pulau Tomia which is highly regarded for the beauty of the underwater world that surrounds it.
But curious visitors who keep their eyes open will soon notice this beauty does not stop at sea level. Arriving from the ocean, the island’s wild white-sand beaches and soaring cliffs await you.
Many lively villages are spread throughout Tomia as well as an ancient heritage site. Discover the nearly unexplored neighboring islands with their unique wildlife and incredible beaches, or head to Tomia’s night market for local delicacies.
Thanks to its underwater beauty, the island has good infrastructure making this destination a perfect mix of comfort, remoteness and pristine nature.
For example check out Kulati village. It might not seem that extraordinary. However, as you approach the TIC (tourism information center) located on the hilly area of the village, you will realize what makes Kulati special: its stunning views of the turquoise sea and the majestic cliffs that border it.
Or what about Kahinga Peak which is one of the highest points on Tomia, and is the most celebrated summit in all of Wakatobi. The view from the top offers stunning vistas of the island’s long beaches and the small surrounding islands, making it a favorite sunset picnic spot among locals. Grab some food, get on a motorbike and join them for an amazing farewell to the sun.
Pulau Tomia – Diving
Pulau Tomia is situated in the heart of the Wakatobi National Park. Tomia Island made Wakatobi famous for what it is, and it is also around these atolls and fringing reefs that you will find the best of what Wakatobi diving has to offer.
This makes for a unique diving experience where you will see incredibly colorful corals teeming with marine life from large trevallies and schools of barracuda to small but stunning nudibranchs and cleaner shrimps.
Most of the 50 dive sites are reached within 5 – 30 minutes by boat. They are varying from walls, fringing reefs, sloping coral reefs and pinnacles in landscaped formations.
There are other locations where you can see larger schools of fish and bigger animals but for sheer reef scenery, topography and marine life variety, you will not be disappointed by Wakatobi.
The Wakatobi Islands offer remoteness & secluded dive sites.
Dive Site Map
Favourite Dive Sites
With more than 50 dive sites scattered around the huge area, we will give you a list of our favourites, – but all of them are worthy of diving!
Roma is perhaps the best-known dive site at Wakatobi, Roma’s pinnacle rises from the depths to within 2 meters of the surface and is covered in the most astounding assortment of corals. The fringing ring of potato coral around the crest gives the dive site its name, thanks to its resemblance to the Colosseum in Rome. A unique rose-shaped turbinaria coral steals the show; stretching across more than 6 meters of the dive site. The upper part of the pinnacle is covered in clouds of anemones and clownfish, and there is plenty more marine life to discover while admiring the striking corals on display.
The Zoo is a patch reef close to the resort just beyond the site Turkey Beach. Named for the plethora of critters founds here it is also a favourite for night dives. As the sun sinks further below the horizon, hunting cuttlefish and lionfish appear from the darkness and your dive light will reveal bobtail squid and octopus out hunting the dark. Dive the Zoo during daylight and you’ll be surrounded by tiny reef fish – they are absolutely everywhere. One of the more unique critters found at The Zoo among mushroom coral are the mushroom pipefish, an unusual tiny white pipefish resembling an underwater python. Peer more closely into the corals and you’ll spot frogfish, ghost pipefish and bright pink hairy squat lobsters as well.
Table Coral City is a great site to see extensive branching and table corals, especially on the upper slopes where this seamount rises to the shallow waters. The crest is covered in huge corals and the sides of the pinnacle have abundant sponges and gorgonians. A large basin of cabbage coral along one side of the seamount and patches of vivid soft corals make great photography subjects. Wherever you look, there is an array of reef fish hovering above the corals and numerous schooling fish patrolling on the edge of blue water.
Blade is the most distant site visited by the resort’s day boats, and the rewards are well worth the journey at this dramatic dive site. Blade consists of a row of elongated parallel seamounts that rise up dramatically from a deeper ridge. These striking seamounts run for more than 200 meters and yet are never wider than 7 meters across. Seen from the side, they resemble the serrated blade of a giant knife. If you drift close to the surface you can view both sides of this formation together, admiring giant sponges and sea fans up to 3 meters across. There are numerous crevices and caverns to explore, some extending through the pinnacle, and the site is entirely covered in corals.
Teluk Maya is one of the most diverse sites at Wakatobi Resort, Teluk Maya is a great dive site that delivers an intriguing mixture of environments all close together. You can enjoy shallow coral formations around a sandy bay with patches of seagrass, or visit a nearby wall with steep overhangs that shelter macro life and black corals. There are large schools of resident batfish in the bay and visiting cuttlefish are known to mate and nest there. Make sure you look closely to find the solar-powered nudibranch. This large invertebrate is a prized find amongst divers. The Lembeh Seadragon, a fairly recently discovered species, can be seen amongst the corals at Teluk Maya. Ask your dive guide, he’ll know where to find this rare site.
If you love critters and colour, the Great Wall of Cornucopia is a real Wakatobi dive highlight. With a higher than average critter counter and a dramatic wall swathed in bright soft corals, there is plenty to keep you occupied. Stay in the shallow for sea fans and sunlight or go deeper to discover larger gorgonians, sponges and black coral groves. The undercuts on the wall host diverse macro life and a special signature resident; Randal’s shrimp goby. Unlike other shrimp goby, which inhabit sandy bottoms, Randal’s prefer the crevices of Cornucopia.
Turkey Beach – This ever-popular site has a resident population of sea turtles, often found gliding along the edge of the drop-off. In addition to these charming turtles, there is also a variety of reef fish, eagle rays and bumphead parrotfish. Divers enjoy Turkey Beach, but with sea turtles patrolling the shallows you might choose to just grab a snorkel and drift along to your heart’s content.
Another favourite amongst guests, Lorenzo’s Delight has extraordinary coral life and is ideal for mixed groups of divers and snorkelers who want to explore together. Gentle slopes are covered with healthy colonies of whip corals, sea fans and barrel sponges and there are numerous overhangs dotted with nudibranchs. Schools of sweetlips, unicornfish and black snappers patrol the reefs and you can also see larger pelagics, such as tuna, in the blue.
Treasure Chest – Beyond the northwestern edge of the House Reef, a trio of seamounts rise from a deeper ridge, including well-known Table Coral City and Waiti Ridge seamounts. But the third seamount is more mysterious. This is the Treasure Chest. Just ten minutes by boat from the resort, it has minimal currents and an impressive array of life. Schools of fusiliers, black snapper and groups of bumphead parrotfish populate the seamount eastern face, along with sea turtles and barracudas. The sandy bottom supports colonies of hundreds of garden eels and the western face is one of the best places at Wakatobi to find frogfish.

Combine Landtours of South Sulawesi
On the southern point of Sulawesi Island, Bira’s nearest access point is through its capital, Makassar. South Sulawesi hosts some of the most beautiful beaches in Indonesia. The accommodation is located on one, and if you rent a motorbike and follow the coast north you will find a number of white, untouched beaches, caves and small islands.
Sulawesi is the largest island of the Wallacea region and hosts at least seven species of macaques that are endemic to the island, some of them occasionally paying a visit to our camp.
Bira is home of the Konjo tribe and the heart of maritime culture in Indonesia. The Birians have been sailors for as long as history has been recorded. To this day, shipbuilding and sailing remain the central focus of daily life and identity. About 70 percent of the population in Bira and surrounding villages make a living through work related to boatbuilding and navigation.
Diving Bira you will meet turtles, moray eels and quite a variety of small critters such as mantis shrimp, anemone shrimps, scorpion fish, a variety of nudibranches and much more. Pelagic species are trevallies hunting on the reefs. Other pelagics that are sometimes seen around Bira are thresher sharks, bull sharks, tiger sharks, hammerheads, tunas, barracudas, giant marble rays, manta rays, sunfish / mola mola and even whale sharks at the right time of the year. July to October seems to be having the most of these pelagic encounters – this is also when the water temperature drops a bit.Scuba Diving in Bira is done from April to November.
- Best diving conditions to witness pelagic life including bigger sharks, mola mola and manta will be in late summer when the water gets colder. This happens from July onwards to October. But of course no guarantees can be made on behalf of nature.

Via Manado / North Sulawesi:
Easy to read, only 2 hours drive from Manado. Located at the foot of Dua Saudara Mountain, the Tangkoko Nature Reserve is comprised of rolling hills and valleys with a variety of hardwood trees and unusual plant life. The animal life is also quite varied, and one can often view Tarsius tarsier (one of the smallest known primates), black tailless monkeys, snakes, spiders and kuskus (marsupials). Tangkoko Batuangus Reserve offers a suitable protective environment to help prevent these animals from becoming extinct.
Only one hour away from Tangkoko Nature Reserve (on the way) is Tasikoki Wildlife Rescue and Education Centre (www.tasikoki.org). Here you can observe many unique species from Indonesia, as well as several endemic to Sulawesi. All animals have been rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. When taking a tour of the centre (1.5 hours) you will learn about conservation of wildlife and nature as well as the rampant wildlife trade. After visiting the animals you can enjoy a vegetarian meal (with fish) together with the staff as well as the many volunteers from all over the world.
Price: $45/person as add-on only to a Tangkoko Nature Reserve trip.
Visit the Vihara Buddhayana (Buddhist Temple) near Gardenia Country Inn, then heading for the small village of Woloan, where you can see the Minahasan Style Houses being built, knock down style, ready for delivery or shipping. Then continue to the base of Mount Mahawu where we begin the 1-hour trek to the crater’s edge. From that vantage point we can see Bunaken & Manado Tua Islands, as well as the bay of Manado. At the bottom of the crater, one can observe a steaming lake and experience the smell of sulfur from the pools.
Then it’s off to see the traditional food & flower market in Tomohon, surprises in store for you!
You will have lunch at Tondano Lake, close to the goldfish farm, where you will enjoy the serenity of the lake. Then we travel to Pulutan Village, a cottage industry for making pottery or choose the Toraget Hot Springs. At the weaving factories you can observe the local weaving traditions being practiced. Last stop is Lake Linow (the changing color lake), a one of a kind experience.
Gorontalo can be reached by a 1 hour flight from Manado or an 9 hour scenic drive. You would be surprised by what Gorontalo has to offer in its forests with its endemic fauna as well as the unique diving of the Togian Islands.
Nantu Forest is located in the heart of the Wallacea region in Gorontalo Province. Wallacea is the wildlife transition zone between Asia and Australia named after its founder, Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913), a famous British biologist, naturalist, and anthropologist.
A community of approximately 30,000 people live within the Nantu and Paguyaman river watershed and is completely dependent on these rivers for its water supply. Nantu’s carbon content is invaluable. Nantu Forest is famous because it is the only place in the world to reliably see its other endemic inhabitants: the Babyrousa celebensis.
The remarkable “prehistoric” appearance of these mammals is largely due to the prominent upwards incurving canine tusks of the males, which actually pierce the flesh in the snout.
One of the most spectacular and thrilling adventure tours in North Sulawesi. The most popular rafting route is on the Nimanga River in Timbukar-Sonder. The grade of the rapids is level 3. You will be picked up at your hotel at 9:00 AM and driven to the village of Sonder (about 1.5 hours from the center of Manado) located in the Minahasan highlands.
Your journey down the 9 km long river will take about one and a half to two hours through scenic forests with a coffee break including traditional cookies. Don’t be shy to scream along the rapids because at the end you will scream for more. Every raft can hold up to six persons including an experienced guide.
After this wet and wild experience, it’s back down the mountain with a lunch stop in a local restaurant. You will arrive at your hotel or the city of Manado (approximately 1.5 hour ride) at approximately 3:00 to 4:00 PM.
Bali – Island of the Gods
Many Tours
Duration Half to Full Day
There are so many things to do in Bali, so instead of listing all of them let us know your interests. Temples, waterfalls, hiking, motorbiking, rafting, cooking, rice fields, coffee etc.
We can tailor make daytrips.
You can visit Ubud, which is a famous town in Balis inland surrounded by rice fields. Here are many many restaurants and souvenir shops and the Monkey forest where the small monkeys roam around and can get a bit nosy around tourists.
Uluwatu Temple is a Balinese Hindu sea temple built at the edge of a 70-meter-high cliff projecting into the sea. A Kecak dance performance based on the Ramayana is performed daily in Uluwatu temple at every 6pm on the cliff-side. The performance which is outdoors also shows the beautiful sunset at the background of the performance
Tanah Lot is one of Bali’s most important landmarks. Its unique offshore setting provides the perfect backdrop for sunset photos. Constructed in the 16th century to honor the Hindu sea god, Baruna, Tanah Lot is one of Bali’s most-visited landmarks.
The Mount Batur hike in Kintamani, Bali is one of the most popular and enjoyable sunrise trekking experiences you can have in Indonesia. Q & A
Yes beginners can dive here and even take beginner courses.
Wakatobi is not infamous for strong currents, but of course, this is still Indonesia and the open ocean, so there will occur some currents, but nothing crazy.
Great! We can offer you courses from entry level to technical dives.
Contact us for further details.
The prices for PADI OPEN WATER courses roughly start at €285 and takes 3-4 days.
The 3 day course will let you study via e-learning before you get here, which is smart if you want to be better prepared and spend your holiday time diving and relaxing instead of studying.
The 4 day course is the most popular and you start your studying once you get here.
The prices are almost identical.
Please book courses at the time of booking the whole trip.
We highly recommend booking most of the dives in order to save a space for you on the dive boats.
The same goes for dive courses – you should book those in advance when you make your booking with Pilgrim Adventure.
All dive places in Indonesia use the “International” Yoke connection for the regulators 1st stage.
If you have a DIN 1st stage you can buy a DIN to Intl. Yoke converter – which might come in handy every time you dive in South East Asia anyway!
There are only two atm’s in Wangi Wangi – the first island you get to in Wakatobi.
So it is important to bring enough cash to Tomia, as it is a 3 hour boat ride in between islands and you cannot pay by ctedit card at the moment at the resort.
This is another good reason to book most dives in advance.
Payment is done via cash or bank transfer.
The only cash accepted is Indonesian Rupiah. You cannot exchange your euro’s or dollars in Tomia.
There is no hospital but there are several doctors nearby who has their own practice at home.
The risk of getting Malaria in the Wakatobi region is very, very low.
Gastrointestinal diseases: We’ve been lucky and have never contracted any, but again make sure you have some rehydration salts and basic medicines on hand. (Consult your doctor regarding appropriate medicines before you go.) Anti-diarrhea medicines like Imodium are best taken only if you have to travel – they only treat symptoms, not causes. Drinking only boiled or otherwise purified water will greatly reduce your chances of stomach troubles. You can read more about drinking water here.
Skin and wound infections: You should clean and treat even small wounds immediately with an antiseptic, and then examine them regularly for signs of infection. Especially if they are coral scrapes, which are notorious for going septic. Keeping wounds dry until healed is also good practice, but it’s a big ask when you’re on a short stay in the islands. Fungal infections love a tropical environment too, so you might want to consider having some antifungal medicine in your first aid kit.
Ear infections: Spending a lot of time with water in your ears in the tropics raises the risk of ear infections, so if you’re concerned pack an appropriate medicine.
Japanese Encephalitis and Dengue Fever: These mosquito-borne diseases have been reported from the Wakatobi Islands. You might want to consider vaccination for Japanese Encephalitis. Avoiding mosquito bites is the only protection available against Dengue Fever.
Tropical diseases: All tropical environments harbour parasites and pathogens not found elsewhere. You’re extremely unlikely to come into contact with any of those during a short holiday in Indonesia, but if you suffer any persistent or recurrent symptoms that can’t be diagnosed or aren’t relieved by standard medical treatment – even if those symptoms appear months after your visit – you should consult a tropical diseases specialist.
See our “About” page to know more about prevention of moscuito bites.
